Department Profile

The City of Clute, Texas is located approximately fifty miles south of Houston on the Texas Gulf Coast.  It is unique in that, as the true Hub of Brazosport, its official population of slightly more than 10,400 grows to more than 20,000 on weekdays because of the area's petrochemical industries. A conservative estimate of through traffic on weekends during the summer months approaches 50,000 or more thanks to our proximity to beaches and the Gulf of Mexico.

The Clute Police Department is charged with the responsibility of providing law enforcement for the community. The Department is headed by the Chief of Police who is responsible to the City Council. All applicable State Laws and City Ordinances are within the enforcement range of the Department and fair and equitable enforcement is a basic tenet of the Department's philosophy.

The Clute Police Department is committed to the concept of Community Oriented Policing because we firmly believe that a true partnership between all segments of the community and the dedicated professionals of the Department is the only way to make our community a safe place in which to live and raise a family. In order to effectively protect and serve the community, the Department stresses proactive law enforcement via identification of potential problems and enactment of preventive measures before problems can reach crisis proportions. These measures are in addition to the traditional methods employed by the Department such as around the clock patrol, surveillance and traffic enforcement.

The Clute Police Department is divided into several distinct areas - administration, patrol, criminal investigation, emergency telecommunications , K-9, and animal control - all working together to ensure the safety of lives and property within the City. In addition, the Department provides two School Resource Officers to Brazoswood High School and presents the D.A.R.E.® program in the elementary schools.

In addition to the traditional functions of a police department, the Clute Police Department also is involved in the community in other ways, including the following:

• providing guest speakers for civic groups and local businesses upon request
• fingerprinting of children upon parental request
• providing instructors for the Brazosport College Law Enforcement Academy and other agencies
• performing charitable work such as providing food baskets for needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas
• supporting youth sports such as Little League baseball, girls' softball and youth soccer
• conducting a Citizen Police Academy.

Due to budget constraints it is unfortunate that we cannot grant requests for shoulder patches via e-mail.  E-mail containing such requests will not receive any type of response.  However, law enforcement agencies may submit a written request on their  letterhead to:
